SETTINGS & FINDINGS N.17  WITH EVA FERNANDEZ MARTOS

by matt lambert

The work of Eva Fernandez Martos is both playful and sharp. As a mechanical engineer turned studio jeweller it is clear to see a sense of technical proficiency and construction. Combining technological processes and traditional hand processes Fernandez references classical jewellery forms and archetypes with a playful twist. Somehow leaving the viewer with something familiar and something to consider. Enjoy!

Taking setting as the background for my work, one of my main aims is to awake people’s curiosity. In a world inundated by mostly unappreciated / throwaway objects and constant flow of information, I try to find that magic combination that makes people stop and look, want to touch and play, or know how and why. The idea of play transpires through most of my work, but even more since I became a mother of twins, and my environment has turned into a playground. The act of play is also part of my process. I play with materials, I play with ideas and associations, I play with words. The first person I want to surprise and bring joy with my work is myself.
For me findings can emerge from that surprising moment when working in the studio, like when something unanticipated happens that open your eyes to new possibilities.  But it also happens when the piece encounters the outside world, and a spark arises between the piece and an individual who looks at it with ‘a fresh pair of eyes’ and putting on it new associations, interpretations.
