SETTINGS & FINDINGS N.11 WITH LORENA LAZARD
SETTINGS & FINDINGS WITH Lorena Lazard by matt lambert
"Lorena Lazard based in Mexico has a practice I relate to in its pushing of multiple ideas and narratives that entangle and connect in poetic ways. The work for me becomes what Henri Lefebvre states as “tiny Epiphanies in which the absolute possibilities of temporal limits of anyone’s existence (are) revealed”. Lorena tackles the large questions of life, asking what does it mean to be human? What are the potentials of becoming? What is the value of place and how have borders of genders and nation altered our views of these values? There is a need to share multiple stories to better reflect her multi faceted oeuvre. Here Lorena shares thoughts on multiple groupings of work to express some of these ideas. Enjoy!"

SETTINGS
I question the reasons of my existence as an individual and as part of a whole.
What makes us humans? Why are we here? What do we need to learn?
FINDINGS
I try to find a place of “talking silence” to quiet the chaos in my head looking for equilibrium in my life. My pieces reflect my emotions, doubts, fears and desires. They are mirrors of my internal experience, around them I try to discover myself. Through my work I reflect, finding at moments some answers, but almost always opening new doors for questions and doubts.
IN THE BEGINNING
Through soil as a metaphor of the substance we humans were created from, I try to understand the meaning of my existence. I use soil from my garden and from around the world, in search of the original place when we were one.
MEMORIES OF THE EARTHQUAKE
Through this piece I want to remember that there is a space between what we are and what we can become. Extreme chaos that leads us to be our best version. How to close this gap without so much pain? How can we remember the lesson?
NOT ONE MORE
Mexico, the country that I live in, is considered to be one of the riskiest countries in Latin America regarding women’s safety. Through these body of work, I try to humanize the victims, returning their humanity and reflect on the voids of femicide: absence, empty spaces that leave a print in our souls
TIERRA
These pieces are created with soil from the border between México and the United States. Even though the soil is the same, their value and meaning according to us, human beings are drastically different and unequal.
