Hand-dyed 100% cotton rope. Wrapped details in mercerized cotton yarn.
Constructed from one length of rope layered three times then dip-dyed, rinsed, and dried. Finally the artist uses fine 1/8" rope to bind the entire necklace together.

While they retain their cultural roots, I also assign them new, layered roles, allowing them to take on more playful and diverse meanings within each piece.

Project/Series Name: Am I a Human, Mom?

(Series created during confinement)

With that question, Vicente's domestic journey begins through the territories, known and undiscovered, revisited, and recreated, which he builds within the physical limits of an apartment, in neighborhood Escandón, in Mexico City.

These are days of quarantine, and Vicente pilots his plane with wooden legs at high speed and is transported, in seconds, from Colombia to the Popocatépetl volcano, and becomes a huge three-eyed dinosaur that causes earthquakes, and then a masked Mexican fighter who recharges with energy with colored gummies… and one morning, at breakfast, looks at me with his intense eyes and asks: "Am I a human, mom...?" "Every day, you can be whatever you want!" I reply.

With that routine, the days have passed in this new normal, during which I have improvised a workshop at home, without more technical and physical resources than those available in a common family home, in which the scarcity of tools and materials has had to be solved with humor and creativity.

It has been here, in this now mysterious space, in which with Vicente's father, I have found, by recording the stories and concerns that our son shares with us (writing notes of his questions and answers; taking photographs, and making sketches and short stories), the supplies to produce these pieces made with basic, homemade materials, with which I want to tell the colossal universe of his imagination, and share an unlimited vision of life with a child, in what for many adults could seem like an enclosure.
