Shimara Carlow is a Designer, Jeweller and Silversmith, born in a remote coastal area in West Cork, Southern Ireland in 1979, the childhood fascination of collecting shells, stones, mermaid's purses, feathers, and seed pods found along the seashore has been the primary inspiration for Shimara’s work. While studying at Glasgow School of Art,

Embarking on a residency at Bishopsland Workshops in South Oxfordshire in 2002, Shimara dedicated two years to exploring larger scale silversmithing and honing their skills to craft a range of silver and 18ct gold jewellery. In 2004, Shimara relocated to London, establishing her own business and workshop while continuing to evolve and sell her creations. Now living in Melbourne, Australia, Shimara draws inspiration from her new surroundings to develop fresh collections of silversmithing and jewellery.

Shimara’s home studio nestled amidst her suburban garden serves as a sanctuary for inspiration and creation. Drawing from the natural world, her artistic approach has always been deeply tactile and organic, with the use of natural found objects amplifying this inherent tactility. Shimara is particularly captivated by seedpods, leaves, flowers, and bird's nests, which serve as the foundation for her tactile and unique jewellery pieces.

Employing a fusion of sterling silver, 18ct gold, and a rich assortment of precious stones, Shimara applies a diverse range of techniques to realise her artistic visions. From the intricate process of reticulation to the delicate art of hand fabrication, each piece of jewellery undergoes meticulous hammering, texturing, and forming. Through these methods, Shimara breathes life into her jewellery, infusing each piece with a distinct blend of craftsmanship and artistry.
